IAAPS visits Bridgwater & Taunton College to inspire future engineering talent

03 April 2025

Members of the IAAPS engineering team visited Bridgwater & Taunton College this week to meet students and staff from the Automotive and Motorsport Engineering courses. The visit was an opportunity to showcase IAAPS’ work in advanced propulsion R&I and to give students a first-hand account of the interesting and rewarding career pathways available in engineering

Head of Engineering at IAAPS, Dr Mike Bates, along with Principal Engineer Greg Slee and Technical Services Manager Simon Swan, gave a short presentation on IAAPS’ facilities and key projects, covering a range of technologies including hydrogen and electrified powertrains. They also spoke to students about different routes into engineering and technical roles, sharing their own experiences and advice on careers in the sector.

“It was great to see so many students keen to learn more about what we do and to hear their questions about the industry,” said Greg Slee. “Supporting the next generation of engineers is hugely important, and it’s fantastic to be able to have these conversations, not just about propulsion technology, but about careers and opportunities in engineering more broadly.”

The students engaged enthusiastically, asking about everything from battery systems to alternative fuels. The visit is part of IAAPS’ wider efforts to connect with colleges and universities to help raise awareness of the many career options available in the engineering sector.

Bridgwater & Taunton College’s Head of Automotive and Engineering, Vincent Maisey, added: “It was a pleasure to have the IAAPS team visit today. Seeing our students participate so eagerly in discussions about propulsion technologies and future career options was brilliant. Partnerships like these give students a real insight into where their studies can take them and help them see the breadth of opportunities available in the industry.”

IAAPS and Bridgwater & Taunton College are keen to keep the conversation going and explore ways to collaborate further in the future.
