IAAPS Joins Hydrogen Innovation Initiative

13 May 2025

IAAPS has joined the Hydrogen Innovation Initiative (HII), a collaboration of leading UK research and technology organisations committed to accelerating critical technologies and supply chains for the fast-growing global hydrogen economy.

IAAPS brings to the partnership deep expertise in the design, development and validation of propulsion systems, including hydrogen-fuelled technologies, utilising its own on-site H2 generation facility for both industrial projects and applied research.

To date, HII has supported over 100 UK organisations through its demonstration programmes, accelerators and supply chain workshops. Multi-partner technical studies have explored key innovation areas such as wind-powered electrolysis and hydrogen material testing.
In 2024 HII published the UK Hydrogen Innovation Opportunity report which quantified the significant opportunity for the UK in the global hydrogen technology market. HII is now working closely with industry and government to implement strategic interventions to ensure the UK seizes this opportunity. In the report, four strategic areas of opportunity were identified – one of which was ‘Hydrogen propulsion systems for transport’. This strategic focus reflects the importance of IAAPS’ contribution and the opportunity to leverage the UK’s transport and engineering expertise to unlock economic and decarbonisation benefits.

IAAPS covers the whole spectrum of transport, including automotive, aerospace, maritime and heavy-duty, with a mission to create the technologies, tools and systems needed in the transition to clean, affordable and sustainable mobility, and is therefore ideally placed to contribute both strategic and operational insights.

Dr Gareth Williams, Director for the Hydrogen Innovation Initiative (HII), said: "If the UK is to succeed in its ambition to not only become a global leader in clean energy but also to kickstart economic growth, it is critically important that we are able to leverage our existing world leading capabilities and institutions to support UK Industry in areas like hydrogen technology. That is why it is a pleasure to welcome IAAPS as a HII strategic partner. IAAPS’ knowledge, experience and capabilities form a critical extension of our partnership and how we are collectively able to support UK industry and hydrogen technology supply chains to become global leaders in such a potential high growth market.”

Tony Reid, Commercial Director at IAAPS, said: “Joining the Hydrogen Innovation Initiative is a natural progression for IAAPS as we continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in clean propulsion. Our involvement will not only help drive innovation in hydrogen-based transport, but also ensure UK supply chains are equipped to scale with confidence. Working alongside such a respected group of partners allows us to channel our expertise into real-world impact – supporting decarbonisation, stimulating economic growth, and reinforcing the UK’s leadership in hydrogen technologies.”

The 14 HII partners are Advanced Propulsion Centre UK, Aerospace Technology Institute, Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult, Connected Places Catapult, Digital Catapult, Energy Systems Catapult, Glass Futures, High Value Manufacturing Catapult, IAAPS, National Physical Laboratory (NPL), Net Zero Technology Centre, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, Satellite Applications Catapult and TWI

HII works with industry in all regions of the UK and across all sectors, and is supported by Innovate UK as well as an Industrial Advisory board.
