IAAPS is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Mike Bates as new Head of Engineering. With over three decades of experience in automotive, motorsport and technology startup sectors with a focus on propulsion systems, powertrain and vehicles, Mike brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the organisation as it continues its mission to drive the transition to net-zero mobility. He will assume his new role at the start of February.
Mike’s career spans engineering consultancy, test services and manufacturing, including senior leadership roles at Ricardo, Ceres Power, Mercedes and Proventia. Since 2010, his work has focused on creating, building and leading operational teams around new test facilities, with a particular emphasis on electrified propulsion and powertrain systems.
Sharing his excitement about joining IAAPS and what attracted him to the role, Mike says: “Of course, it goes without saying that the state-of-the-art test capabilities at IAAPS were an immediate draw. But equally, perhaps more importantly, is the opportunity to work with the IAAPS team, customers and R&I partners from the University of Bath in a unique collaborative model. It is clear that an extremely capable and talented team has been assembled, and I am excited to lead and be part of that team. My aim is to take on the next stage of development, as we grow from a solid base to increase the scale and scope of our Engineering capabilities.”
He adds: “IAAPS’ mission to solve industry challenges is a simple, clear statement with huge ambition behind it. The global challenge to achieve net zero is the greatest in our generation. In my role as Head of Engineering, I am in a privileged position to be part of delivering our mission across all the industrial sectors and applications that we support. My goal is to bring robust and effective Engineering solutions to meet these challenges and ensure that the processes and techniques we develop are validated, adapted and utilised effectively for the benefit of all."
“My priority is to guide our Engineers and the wider IAAPS team members to deliver projects effectively, efficiently and safely. I will be taking a hands-on approach to familiarise myself with all aspects of our operations, but most importantly, giving individuals the opportunity and environment to acquire new skills and responsibilities. I also look forward to engaging directly with our customers and partners, to work together to achieve and exceed our objectives and to develop long-term, mutually beneficial relationships.”
Welcoming Mike to the team, Rob Oliver, Managing Director of IAAPS, says: “We are thrilled to have Mike join us as Head of Engineering. His extensive experience and proven leadership in propulsion systems and test facility operations make him the ideal person to lead our Engineering team through the next exciting phase of IAAPS’ development. Mike’s passion for innovation and collaborative working aligns perfectly with our ethos. I look forward to seeing the impact of his leadership as we continue to push boundaries and deliver meaningful solutions for the industry.”
